A Garry's Mod roleplay project

aletheia

Text-based horror & thriller one-shots, staged like films. Built on Source. Pushed far past where it was meant to go.

File 00 — The project

truth, unconcealed

aletheia is an ongoing, mainly horror and thriller themed text-based roleplay server project for Garry's Mod. Our goal is to offer something new by pushing Source Engine to its absolute limits — making it look far more modern than it has any right to.

Every session is built around an immersive, cinematic atmosphere, staged with tools we've spent the past few years developing in-house.

File 01 — The format

one setting. one night. one story.

The core of the project is sessions — self-contained one-shots that run on a schedule. You don't need a hundred hours of backstory to step in. You need a character, a flashlight, and the nerve to keep it on.

scheduled one-shots

Sessions run on announced schedules, so every player arrives at the same moment the story begins.

Self-contained

unique settings

Each one-shot has its own setting and theme — an abandoned homestead, a sealed basement, a cemetery at first light. No two sessions look or feel alike.

Never the same twice

sequels, when earned

Some stories refuse to stay buried. Scenarios that warrant it return as sequels — same world, deeper story, and consequences that carry over.

Continuity optional

Every concluded one-shot is filed here. What happened inside stays with the people who survived it — these are only the covers.

File 05 — The engine

source, against its will

Three years of in-house tooling goes into every frame. We treat Garry's Mod less like a sandbox and more like a film set.

  • Cinematic staging Letterboxed framing, blocking and camera work treated like a cinematic shoot.
  • Custom lighting Our own GI system consisting of different techniques that earns its place.
  • Bespoke area design Environments built per scenario, dressed down to the tablecloth.
  • Text-first roleplay Slow-burn, written roleplay where the immersive atmosphere shines through for you.

File 07 — Questions

before you sign anything

Do I need prior roleplay experience?

No. Sessions are self-contained and text-based — if you can describe what your character does and stay in the moment, you're qualified. The atmosphere does most of the heavy lifting, you just need to maintain your place within it.

What happens if my character dies?

They stay dead for that story. Since each one-shot is its own scenario, a death is an ending, not a punishment. You'll be back in the next session with someone new. Some of our best moments came from characters who didn't make it out.

Is this a combat-focused focused server?

No. This is text-first, slow-burn horror roleplay. Mechanical skill matters far less than your willingness to write, react, and let a scene breathe. Whilst the combat is shoot-to-kill, it has been fine tuned to remain immersive and balanced.

How long does a session run, and how do I get a seat?

Sessions are announced ahead of time with the date and a teaser of the setting. Seats are limited to keep events intimate, so sign-ups open on our community hub — watch the "next transmission" briefing above and join the Discord to be notified.

What content should I expect?

Horror and thriller themes: dread, gore, the occasional thing in the dark that does not stop walking. Content boundaries and tone are set per scenario and communicated before each session — read the briefing, and if a theme isn't for you, sit that one out.
